As part of St. Joseph’s College of Law outreach initiative, a group of students from 1st BA LLB ‘A’ conducted a one-day program at Preethi Nivas Old Age Home. The main goals and objectives of this outreach were to allow students to interact with elderly residents, build friendships and companionship with them, engage in recreational activities, and listen to their life experiences.

The program was held on August 30, 2025. It comprised various activities designed to encourage interaction and participation. Students organised an “Art Therapy” session in which residents were asked to draw anything that came to their mind. This was a very successful session and many of the residents enjoyed it. Some of them proved to be great artists, drawing their homes, family members, scenery, and many other meaningful images.

After the art session, the students showcased their talents through singing, guitar performances, and dance, all dedicated to the residents. Not only the students but also the residents were enthusiastic enough to come forward and showcase their own talents. They sang beautifully and some even danced very well, which left everyone in awe. In fact, the residents became the showstoppers of the program.

The visit was met with great energy and enthusiasm from the moment we got on the bus. As first-year students were still getting to know each other, everyone was very interactive. Some danced to the music while others cheered, creating a joyful, lively atmosphere.

During the interaction, the students learned a great deal from the residents, who shared their experiences at the old-age home and their life journeys. Some students were moved to tears after hearing their stories, while others asked for advice, which the residents shared with great sincerity and clarity. One of the residents said, “Life is very hard and it will only get harder. My one piece of advice is to take care of your mom and dad. Mom and Dad love you a lot, so you have to show them the same affection.”

Overall, the students gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by the elderly and the importance of compassionate care, love, and responsibility. The experience reinforced the program’s core values by fostering empathy and social responsibility among the students as young adults.
