Debate Society Orientation 2025-26: Report

The Debate Society and Model United Nations Society conducted their Orientation for the Academic year 2025-2026 on 11th September 2025 in collaboration with the Public Policy Committee.

The Orientation began with an opening statement by the President of the Debate Society, Ms. Yuktha V Anand, as to what the true essence of Debating is and what was the vision of the committee. In her speech, she stated that debating had been a crucial influence in the development of her confidence and leadership abilities, while recalling an incident from a school debate competition. She further added that this early exposure to debating inspired her to pursue it more seriously, ultimately contributing to her growth as a leader.

Following this, a presentation was given by our fellow coordinators, Mr. Harlton Lejo Joseph and Ms. Rishu Nanjappa, who are in fact ardent debaters and have won multiple competitions. They respectively gave an insight into what were the procedures and ways in which one could take part in a Debate, what were the types of Debates that were conducted and most importantly, how could one effectively put forth their arguments in a Debate.

The Orientation was then addressed by the committee’s Faculty Coordinator, Asst. Professor Edwin Joney, who went on to present what the committee aims to accomplish for the students through the means of debating, thus presented this year’s edition of the Intra-College Debate Competition 2025, which was in collaboration with the Public Policy Committee. Here, the students were presented with the structure of the competition, the motions for each round and the general instructions pertaining to the overall competition.
