Seminar on What Law School Doesn’t Teach You- A Primer on Private Equity and Venture Capital Transactions organized by the Corporate law committee on 21st January 2023

The talk on private equity was delivered by an expert in the field, Mr. Gautam Rego, Partner AZB, who provided insights into the workings of the industry, the challenges it faces, and the opportunities it offers. Private equity is a type of investment that involves buying and selling equity in privately held companies. The goal of private equity firms is to generate high returns on their investments by acquiring undervalued or distressed companies, improving their operations, and then selling them at a profit.

During the talk, the speaker highlighted several key aspects of private equity. One of the main advantages of private equity is the ability to take a long-term view of investments, as opposed to public equity markets, which tend to focus on short-term gains. Private equity firms also have more control over their investments, which allows them to make strategic decisions to improve the performance of their portfolio companies.

Private equity and venture capital are two distinct forms of investment that play crucial roles in funding and shaping the business landscape. Private equity focuses on acquiring established companies, restructuring them, and selling them for a profit, while venture capital focuses on investing in early-stage, high-growth potential startups. Both private equity and venture capital provide capital and expertise to businesses, but they differ in terms of investment strategies, risk profiles, and stages of investment.
