Report on Workshop on Dissertation Writing for LL.M. Students

A workshop on “Dissertation Writing for LL.M. Students” was conducted with the objective of guiding postgraduate law students on the process of selecting, researching, and drafting their LL.M. dissertations in accordance with the institutional guidelines and academic standards prescribed by the college and Karnataka State Law University.

The workshop was held on 14 March 2026 at 7:00 AM in Room No. 206, Admin Block, St. Joseph’s College of Law, Bengaluru. The session was conducted by Dr. Shreshth Bhatnagar, Assistant Professor, who provided practical insights into the different stages involved in dissertation writing.

The session lasted for one hour and was designed to provide a structured understanding of the dissertation process, including topic selection, proposal preparation, literature review, research methodology, drafting, citation standards, and submission requirements.

During the workshop, students were guided on how to identify a relevant and manageable research topic, formulate clear research objectives and research questions, and conduct an effective literature review using appropriate academic sources such as statutes, case laws, journal articles, and research databases. Emphasis was also placed on selecting a suitable research methodology, including doctrinal, empirical methods of legal research.

The session further explained the structure of an LL.M. dissertation, including the introduction, review of literature, research objectives, methodology, analysis and discussion presented in chapters, findings, conclusion, bibliography, and appendices. Students were also informed about formatting and citation requirements, including the importance of proper referencing and maintaining academic integrity in research work.

Additionally, the importance of regular consultation with research supervisors, adherence to the prescribed timelines, and careful drafting and revision of dissertation chapters was highlighted. Practical suggestions were also shared to help students manage their research work effectively and prepare for the final submission and viva voce. The session was interactive and engaging, with students actively participating in discussions and seeking clarification on various aspects of dissertation writing. All the participants attended the workshop with great enthusiasm and interest, which made the session productive and meaningful.

The workshop concluded with a brief discussion and clarification of doubts. Overall, the workshop proved to be informative and beneficial for the LL.M. students, providing them with clear guidance on the process and expectations of postgraduate legal research.
