Report on Research Orientation Program

The SJCL Research Cell organized a Research Orientation Program on 19 September 2025 with the objective of introducing students to the significance of legal research and the activities of the Research Cell. The program aimed to familiarize the incoming batch with the fundamentals of legal research and encourage them to actively engage in scholarly writing and academic inquiry during their course of study. The session was conducted by Dr. Shreshth Bhatnagar, who introduced the students to the vision and objectives of the Research Cell and emphasized the importance of research in legal education. The orientation highlighted how research contributes to the development of analytical thinking, legal reasoning, and academic writing skills, which are essential for law students.

During the session, students were introduced to the basic structure of a legal research project, including the introduction, statement of the research problem, existing legal situation, literature review, scope and objectives, research questions, research hypothesis, and research methodology. Each component was explained with practical illustrations to help students understand how a research study is conceptualized and structured. To make the session more engaging and practical, contemporary socio-legal examples were discussed. These included topics such as the regulation of Artificial Intelligence in India and the recent criminal law reforms introduced through the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and related criminal law amendments. Through these examples, students were able to understand how research tools can be applied to analyze emerging legal issues and policy developments. The orientation also highlighted the various research opportunities available to students, including writing research papers, participating in conferences and seminars, contributing to academic publications, and assisting in faculty-led research projects.

Students were encouraged to actively participate in the activities organized by the Research Cell to develop their research and writing skills. The program witnessed the active participation of around 110 first-year students, who attended the session with great interest and enthusiasm. Their engagement during the discussion reflected their curiosity about research and academic writing. After the completion of the 1 hour and 15 minutes session conducted by Dr. Shreshth Bhatnagar, the students were accompanied by student volunteers of the Research Cell to the college library. During this visit, the students were introduced to the library facilities and research resources available within the institution. The volunteers explained how the library is well equipped with both offline resources such as books, journals, law reports, and commentaries, as well as online legal databases and digital research platforms. Students were also guided on how these resources can be effectively utilized for academic research, assignments, and future dissertation work. The program concluded with an interactive discussion where students clarified their doubts regarding research writing, topic selection, and available research opportunities. The orientation session was informative and engaging, and the students participated with enthusiasm. Overall, the program successfully introduced the new batch to the importance of research and motivated them to contribute to the growing research culture at SJCL.
