Moot Court Society Orientation Programme

The Moot Court Society of St. Joseph’s College of Law organized its Orientation Programme 2025 for the first-year students on 3rd and 4th September 2025. The programme aimed to familiarize the students with the fundamentals of mooting, research, drafting, and advocacy skills through structured sessions conducted by esteemed alumni and senior students.

Day 1 – 3rd September 2025
Session I- Introduction to Mooting

The first session was conducted by Mr. Balachandar K, an alumnus of St. Joseph’s College of Law. He delivered an insightful presentation on the Introduction to Mooting, covering the basics, essentials of mooting, and techniques of reading and understanding a moot proposition. His session laid a strong foundation for the participants by clarifying fundamental concepts and highlighting the importance of analytical skills in moot court activities.

Session II- Review of Memorandum
The second session was led by another alumnus, Mr. Venkatesh Kamath, who addressed the critical aspects of reviewing the memorial, conducting legal research, and drafting a moot memorandum. His session emphasized the significance of structuring arguments, citation of authorities, and drafting skills in shaping a strong case before the court. The first day concluded with these two enriching sessions, equipping students with both theoretical and practical insights into the art of mooting.

Day 2 – 4th September 2025
Session I – Demonstration Moot

Day 2 commenced with a demonstration moot court session presented by senior students with prior competition experience. The demonstration provided the first-year students with a practical understanding of courtroom procedure and mooting dynamics.

• Judges: Mr. Chanakya M (5th BA LLB A) and Mr. Brian Lobo (5th B.Com LLB)
• Respondent Team: Mr. Hari Krishnan and Mr. K.S. Anirudh (5th BA LLB A)
• Petitioner Team: Mr. Shankar (4th BA LLB A) and Mr. Mohammed Saqlain (4th BBA LLB)
The demonstration offered the juniors valuable exposure to oral advocacy, courtroom etiquette, and structured argumentation.

Session II – Advocacy and Pleading Skills
The second session of the day was conducted by Mr. Shankar (4th BA LLB A), who delivered a presentation on “How to Argue in a Moot Court Competition and How to Plead.” The session focused on advocacy techniques, manner of addressing the bench and presenting arguments effectively.
The day concluded with the students submitting their feedback through a Google form, ensuring continuous improvement of the orientation programme.

Feedback
The feedback collected from the first-year students highlights the success of the orientation programme conducted on 3rd and 4th September 2025. The sessions received an overall positive response, with most participants rating them as Excellent or Good.

Session 1 – Introduction, Essentials of Mooting by Mr. Balachandar K
• Majority of students found the session excellent, appreciating the clarity and engagement.
• A smaller section rated it Good, noting it was informative and helpful.

Session 2 – Drafting of Memorial by Mr. Venkatesh Kamath
• Most students rated it excellent, finding the explanations insightful.
• Some students rated it average, suggesting scope for more detailed coverage.

Session 3 – Demonstration Moot
• Responses were more mixed: many found it Good or Excellent, while a few felt it could be improved.

Session 4 – How to Argue and Plead by Mr. Shankar
• The session was widely appreciated, with most students rating it excellent or good.
• The focus on practical advocacy skills was particularly valued.









Conclusion
The two-day Orientation Programme successfully introduced the first-year students to the world of mooting. With the guidance of alumni and senior students, the sessions provided a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical exposure. The interactive approach ensured that students not only learned the essentials of mooting but also witnessed its real-time application, inspiring them to actively participate in future moot court activities.
