Brief Report on Building Your Legal Career Seminar

The Placement Cell of St. Joseph’s College of Law organised a Career Guidance Seminar titled “Building Your Legal Career” on April 2, 2026 in the AV Room of the Old Building. The session was conducted mainly for 1st and 2nd year law students with the objective of helping them understand different career paths within the legal profession and the importance of planning their careers early.

The seminar featured two senior student speakers from the college. Mr. Shankar Reddy, a 4th year BA LLB student, spoke about the litigation field, while Mr. Brian Lobo, a 5th year BCom LLB student, discussed careers in the corporate sector. Both speakers shared their personal experiences, practical guidance, and insights gained through internships, moot courts, networking, and professional exposure.

During the session, the speakers explained the major differences between litigation and corporate law careers. They highlighted that litigation requires strong advocacy skills, courtroom experience, and independent practice, whereas corporate law focuses more on drafting, business understanding, negotiations, and corporate transactions. They advised students to identify their interests early so that they could build their internships, moots, research work, and extracurricular activities in alignment with their chosen career path.

The speakers also provided students with a year-wise roadmap for career development throughout law school. They discussed the importance of court visits, internships, networking, moot courts, research papers, and skill development at different stages of legal education. Practical guidance was given on how students can secure internships through direct applications, LinkedIn networking, alumni contacts, and Placement Cell opportunities.

A major focus of the seminar was professional development. The speakers stressed the importance of maintaining a professional image from the beginning of law school. They advised students to prepare strong one-page CVs, improve communication skills, learn professional email etiquette, and develop technical skills such as typing, MS Word, Excel, and legal research platforms. They also discussed the growing role of AI tools in legal practice and encouraged students to use them carefully and responsibly.

The seminar also included an interactive question-and-answer session where students raised practical concerns regarding internships, attendance management, and choosing research topics. The speakers encouraged students to accept every learning opportunity during internships, remain disciplined in managing academics and internships together, and choose research topics that match their long-term career goals.

Overall, the session provided students with clear and practical guidance regarding career building in the legal profession. It helped students understand the importance of early planning, skill development, networking, and professional conduct during law school.
