Law and Gender Committee & Human Rights Committee organized “Samvadha: Start a Conversation”

The objective of the conversation is to promote a thought-provoking exploration of societal issues faced by students in their daily lives. The event was conducted on the 22nd of January, 2024 by the Law and Gender Committee in collaboration with the Human Rights Committee in the College quadrangle.

The event commenced by the introductory message given by Mr. Bhasker by sharing his personal experiences of unfair expectations. The talk progressed to the discrimination & the effect of the expectations on men & women.

The students shared various circumstances where they have experienced gender bias and discussed the effect of wrong influence of certain people on students with impressionable ages.

Female Faculty also shared their personal experience of being objectified and disadvantaged even in regular walks of life as well as expectations thrust upon women to prioritise family over career. Male students shared their discomfort to be vulnerable & share their experiences and throwed light on the fact that laws are used against men in various instances.

The importance of liberation in Indian society and the need of women to support and uplift women as well as the need for more talking spaces for people to talk as well as listen and understand was discussed.

The female students shared their experiences of being sexually harassed and the mindset of the Indian society that women are thrust with expectations from a young age to behave in a certain manner because of their gender. Male students shared their personal experiences of being sexually assaulted as well as being witness of discrimination against women in their family and work spaces. The Indian parent’s mindset was also discussed and views were shared from the perspective of the parents. Students also shared instances where chores were being gendered and the need to change the mindset of family for a better society.

To conclude the session, the students and faculty mentioned changes they would like to bring individually for a more inclusive society. The conclusion was given by Mr. Satyaki sir regarding the importance of creating a safe space for students to reach out if they ever require any assistance. The need to be mindful to not resort to inherent biases during vulnerable moments was encouraged. The event was an enlightening, interactive and was very educative.
