Panel Discussion on “ Issues in gerontology”

A panel discussion on “Issues in Gerontology” was organized as a part of the Elders Law certificate programme on the 28th of February 2018. Ms. Katharine N. Bernstein, a visiting professor from the University of Seattle was the chairperson for the discussion. She was joined by three professionals, each at the top of their respective fields. Dr. Sarasu Esther Thomas, a professor of law, and the Coordinator of the Centre for Women and the Law at National Law School of India University, Bangalore. The students were given a legal perspective of gerontology by Prof. Sarasu . Dr. Olinda Timms, a senior faculty member of the medical ethics department at St. Johns Medical College, shared her expert opinion on the many ethical dilemmas, faced by medical practitioners. Dr. Pritha Das Gupta, Professor of Sociology spoke of the need for law to change with changing social scenarios.

The panel also addressed a series of questions ranging from the legality of wills to euthanasia. At the end of the discussion the panelists concluded that Indian laws do not adequately address these issues of socio-medico-legal importance.
