Visit to Juvenile Justice Board

The students of the II LLB class were given an insightful experience on December 13, 2024, through an outreach program to the Juvenile Justice Board. This visit was particularly relevant as the students are currently studying the paper “Criminal Law = II,” which covers the Juvenile Justice Act, making the practical exposure valuable for their academic learning.

During the visit, the students were introduced to the functioning of the Juvenile Justice Boards, which are pivotal in the implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act. The premises of the board are managed by various officials, including wardens and support staff, all of whom play a crucial role in the rehabilitation of juveniles.

One of the wardens explained the operational structure of the facility, which is divided into three shifts, ensuring continuous care for the inmates. He detailed the housing arrangements, focusing on how the children are looked after in a secure and supportive environment. The importance of providing nutritious food in line with prescribed nutritional standards was emphasized, ensuring that the juveniles’ physical well-being is well-maintained.

The warden also highlighted the presence of professional counsellors who focus on the mental health aspect of the juveniles. These counsellors provide psychological support, addressing the emotional and mental well-being of the children, which is a key component of their rehabilitation process. Additionally, the facility offers vocational training to the juveniles, helping them acquire skills that can aid their reintegration into society once they complete their time at the centre.

This visit allowed the students to gain a deeper understanding of how the Juvenile Justice Act is practically applied, moving beyond theoretical knowledge to the real-life workings of the Juvenile Justice Boards. The visit was a valuable learning experience that provided insights into the holistic approach to juvenile rehabilitation, including physical, mental, and vocational development.
